I have never yet hit 50,000 words in a month, though I haven’t given up trying. I did get a good bit of work done on a new book, and learned more about writing as I do every time I write. So that’s all good and I will continue.

I’ve also started on a new PD book, the first volume of the 1884 classic, Cassell’s Popular Gardening. Scans of the original are available online for free, but as with 200 Eggs, the Clary Books edition will be completely reformatted with additions and re-touched graphics. I’ll start with an ebook format and may create a print edition if that can be done economically. Anyway, I’m enjoying myself with Cassell’s, which is a lovely book.

August sales were virtually nil, so there’s nothing to report on that front. I will continue to work on getting more books out for sale, keeping in mind that I’m a slow writer. In the meantime, I have a few links for you.

• Another author, Cate Rowan, shares her first year of sales as a self-published author. Her numbers are very encouraging.

• I think you’ll enjoy this list of 25 Things to Know About Self-Publishing. Chuck Wendig has a very entertaining style of writing, and a balanced view of the rewards and challenges of self-publishing.

• Passive Guy has a blog post up about an author’s lawsuit against a publisher charging restraint of trade due to a nasty non-compete clause in a publishing contract. Read and learn. We all need to understand contracts and the pitfalls therein.

• And here’s something I am a bit ambivalent about. Amazon’s @author program lets readers contact authors while reading their book. I’ll have to take a deep breath and think about this one. My Twitter feed is full of politics and bits of rants. I’m not sure many readers would want to get involved with that! Contact via Author Central makes sense to me though. Pondering…

And that’s it for today. I’m off to get some work done.
